Congratulating Dato Seri Najib on his appointment, MIUP president said Najib has pledged to unite all Malaysians under the 'One Malaysia' concept and MIUP is very confident that the One Malaysia concept will be successful.

Dato Nalla , also expressed his gratitude to former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for his contributions to the Indian community,and the formation of MIUP.

The same matter was also raised by Malaysian Indian United Party president KS Nallakaruppan, who said that the police must come clean on the matter.

"This is the second incident in a short period of time. First we had the case of car park attendant B Prabakar and now this," he told Malaysiakini.

The Prabakar-case involved police personnel allegedly abusing and pouring hot water on the man while being questioned in police custody. He was picked up to assist in investigations into a robbery.

Subsequently, seven police personnel were charged with voluntarily causing hurt to Prabakar and 18-year-old C Solomon Raj to make them confess to a criminal intimidation case.

Nallakaruppan said that the police must similarly show accountability and transparency in the Kugan matter and bring the wrongdoers to justice.

"The police must reveal why Kugan had so many scars on his body. Why were there deep cuts in his wrists?

"And they must also explain how the interrogation was conducted and by whom," he said.

UMUM mengetahui Datuk K.S. Nallakaruppan suatu ketika adalah rakan karib Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Keakraban itu ketara hinggakan beliau dipenjarakan kerana mempertahankan perjuangan Penasihat Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) itu.

Bagaimanapun Mei tahun lalu, bekas Ketua Bahagian PKR Kepong itu membuat keputusan mengejut keluar parti kerana hilang kepercayaan terhadap kepimpinan Anwar.

Pada kempen pilihan raya kecil Parlimen Permatang Pauh ini, meskipun mendakwa nyawanya diugut, Nallakaruppan tetap muncul untuk membantu jentera Barisan Nasional (BN) di beberapa kawasan kampung sekitar Permatang Pauh.

Ditemui selepas berceramah di Kampung Kubang Ulu, Bukit Mertajam semalam, beliau memberitahu wartawan Utusan Malaysia, ABDUL MUIN SAPIDIN mengenai peluang bekas rakan rapatnya itu pada pilihan raya tersebut.

Dulu Datuk rakan karib Anwar selama lebih 30 tahun. Mengapa sekarang menentang perjuangan beliau?

NALLAKARUPPAN: Saya mengenali Anwar bukan sekejap tapi lebih 30 tahun. Saya menghormatinya bukan sahaja sebagai seorang sahabat tetapi seorang pemimpin. Malah, saya masuk penjara Sungai Buloh semata-mata mahu mempertahankan perjuangannya.

Tetapi melihat tindak-tanduknya sejak beberapa tahun lalu, saya dapati beliau bukan lagi seorang rakan dan pejuang negara yang pernah saya kenal. Beliau hanya mementingkan diri sendiri yang bercita-cita besar untuk menjadi Perdana Menteri.

Ada menganggap keputusan anda keluar daripada PKR kerana dipengaruhi pihak tertentu untuk menjatuhkan Anwar.

NALLAKARUPPAN: Seperti yang saya nyatakan, saya mengenali beliau cukup lama. Saya tidak berniat hendak menyerang peribadi beliau. Namun pendirian saya itu berubah setelah saya tidak tahan melihat rakyat terus tertipu dengan janji-janji kosongnya untuk memenuhi impian menjadi Perdana Menteri.

Sebenarnya, bukan mudah membuat keputusan keluar parti (PKR), tetapi saya fikir masak-masak bahawa saya mesti mempertahankan apa yang sepatutnya saya perjuangkan. PKR bukan berjuang untuk rakyat tetapi berjuang untuk Anwar Ibrahim. Sebab itu ramai mengatakan beliau ‘pelakon nombor satu’.

Kenapa anda berkata demikian?

NALLAKARUPPAN: Saya tahu benar bahawa beliau hanya berbohong kepada masyarakat semata-mata untuk mendapatkan undi mereka sahaja. Paling jelas bagaimana beliau mahu meraih sokongan masyarakat India. Sentimen yang Anwar buat ialah mencetuskan ketegangan sehinggalah wujudnya kumpulan yang menentang kerajaan seperti Hindraf. Anwar berlakon sebagai pejuang untuk rakyat.

Sejauh mana maklum balas daripada masyarakat India?

NALLAKARUPPAN: Orang India perlu fikir apakah sumbangan Anwar kepada masyarakat India terutama ketika beliau memegang jawatan Timbalan Perdana Menteri dan Menteri Kewangan. Sekarang pula beliau bangga mendakwa beliau seperti Sivaji the boss kononnya mahu menyelamatkan orang India. Ini semua dilakukan untuk menarik sokongan orang India dan berharap dengan sokongan itu membantu beliau jadi Perdana Menteri. Tapi saya fikir lama kelamaan orang India akan sedar bahawa ini sekadar permainan politik Anwar.

Anwar nampaknya yakin akan menang dalam pilihan raya kecil ini dan mahu menjadikan kemenangan itu platform mengetuai kerajaan bulan depan. Benarkah?

NALLAKARUPPAN: Saya fikir rakyat Malaysia perlu membuat penilaian berdasarkan rekod perkhidmatan Anwar selama ini. Dalam semua ceramahnya, Anwar bercakap beliau mahu buat itu, buat ini untuk tarik sokongan. Kita yang dengar ceramah Anwar memang seronok, sedap mendengarnya. Businessman Dato K.S Nallakaruppan, the former ally close friend of Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is in Permatang Pauh to support the Barisan Nasional.
Nallakaruppan, who now head the Malaysian Indian United Party (MIUP), said his party members would be in the constituency to help the Barisan campaign.
He quit PKR in May last year after a rift with Anwar. He formed MIUP in September same year. In May this year, he pledged his full support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi .
When asked for his opinion on the by-election and Barisan's chances, Nallakaruppan said there was no doubt it would be tough fight.

"Anwar was 'very cold' towards me" Ezam

The once close ties which ex-PKR Youth chief Mohamad Ezam Md Nor shared with Anwar Ibrahim has now been reduced to polite acknowledgment whenever the two meet at functions.

Revealing this in an interview with Malaysiakini, Ezam described PKR de facto leader Anwar as being "very cold" to him but was quick to add that he takes all this in good faith.

The charismatic anti-corruption politician made news earlier week when he rejoined Umno despite being a fierce critic of the ruling party for more than 10 years.

In the final part of this interview, Ezam talks about rumours about being a ‘Trojan horse', Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's advice to him and his relationship with Malaysian Indian United Party (MIUP) KS Nallakaruppan,.

Did Anwar Ibrahim know about your discussions with Umno leaders to join the party?

No, I don't have any contact with him since I left the party. He did not make any attempts to contact me. Sometimes we might meet on occasions like kenduri (thanksgiving dinner) or funerals and we greet each other but we don't make any conversations.

He was very cold towards me but I take it in good faith. So all the contact I have with Prime Minister (Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) and deputy PM (Najib Abdul Razak) lately was not known to him.

There has been a blog set up a few days ago documenting the police and ACA reports you had made before you rejoined Umno. Do you think your views have changed?

There is a smear campaign to discredit me and I have friends in PKR, they too know that my strength is in my morality and integrity. I have no money unlike many other leaders. I still stand by what I have said previously. When I met Abdullah, we did not discuss about retraction of any reports I had made (against him). He did not ask and I did not offer. I have done my job and the reports are now with the police and the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA).

It's not like I joined Umno and retracted all my statements against Abdullah. If that happened, you can question me but I did not. What I have done in the past is consistent with what I'm doing now. The bravery of Abdullah to give ACA freedom means all corruption reports will be investigated fairly and this includes reports made against him by me.

Who would have thought that this was possible? When Anwar was DPM, at best he did was to push for a provision to empower ACA a little, which is not even close to what Abdullah had announced recently. It's not like I want to compare the two, I am not here for the individual. I am for the policy and this (anti-corruption) policy is significant.

All I have said in the past relates back to this - that the cause of all the country's problems from (political) parties to (the plight of the) Malays stems from corruption. When Abdullah announced that ACA will be made independent, to me this is my stone and I hold to that and this is my space to pursue what I believe.

I can play the same game by publishing all of Anwar's speeches when he was in Umno where he supported the New Economic Policy and pro-Malay policies endlessly that contradicts what he says today but I don't play politics like that. I'm forward looking without compromising my principles.

Are you saying Anwar's people are behind this?

I think the groups that are most threatened with my decision are (Anwar's people). Normally, it's the most threatened people who would resort to this.

You don't think it could be people from Umno who are uncomfortable with your re-entry into the party?

Maybe. Any anti-reform elements (in Umno) might do that but I don't think they have that sort of comprehensive archives compared to my friends in PKR.

How will you deal with the political culture of Umno members who are afraid to go against something that is not right in the party?

The whole process is not completed but what is important is the space to further strengthen - and the commitment to a free - ACA is fundamental. To have someone in power, like the PM, to make such a commitment is very significant.

There are enough elements in Umno in furthering the agenda of reforms. In media, we can see the information minister (Ahmad Shabery Cheek) initiating quite positive reforms. I saw the statement by Rembau MP Khairy (Jamaluddin) about freedom of the media, which is very positive and brave, coming from administration and ruling party.

Do you think your ‘disloyalty' to the party will put you in contradiction with Umno's political culture, which is putting loyalty to the party before self?

There are some cultures that remain and there are some cultures that we can change. I'm not asking them to follow me. I'm just an ordinary member. If I can make a small change - we must teach members to be loyal to the cause and not just the party. The problem with big parties is the spirit of the struggle.

We must return to the basis of this struggle and if given the chance to discuss with Umno leaders - they hope to get insights from me on how to return the spirit of the struggle back to the party.

What do you think about allegations that you're a PKR spy or a Trojan horse?

These allegations come from two parties. Umno is worried that I would bring Anwar in. While Anwar is worried that I would bring PKR members into Umno. Both sides are saying, ‘don't worry, this is part of our game'.

I have no agenda. I returned to Umno without a personal agenda for anybody - not for PKR or Umno, or even Abdullah. I am in Umno with a reform agenda. To be a spy is the lowest moral standing that any politician should have and that's definitely not my stand.

Will there be more of your supporters joining Umno?

I have no plans to bring more people to Umno or create a wave. I am confident that it is based on faith and it's up to them. Some of them who are very close to me since Day One did not follow me. If you have the conviction that you can perform effectively in Umno or PKR or PAS, then do it.

How will you be maintaining your independence in fighting corruption when Umno is riddled with money politics?

Of course, that is very tough to be independent in a political party but I will try my best to pursue my ideals for reform without fear or favour within Umno. I do not know the consequences or how Umno is going to react but I think if they have learned their lessons right in the last general election, I think they should be more open to critics from within.

Do you know what position you hope to get within Umno?

(Laughs) I wouldn't know. It's too early.

Did Abdullah specifically say what he wants you to do with regards to reform when you join Umno?

Being a simple man like Abdullah, he just told me, ‘buat apa-apa lah Ezam, janji baik, jangan buat yang tak baik' (do anything Ezam, as long as it's good for the party, don't do anything that is bad). In verbatim, that's what he said (laughs). I see it in a positive way, he gave me a blank cheque to do anything good.

Will you be involved in the setting up of the new Malaysian Commission on Anti-Corruption (MCAC)?

I'm not sure. (Abdullah) did not indicate anything but I would like to get involved - not to get a position but to share my views on ISA (Internal Security Act) and OSA (Official Secrets Act). I hope by sharing my views with them and hope they would accept the review of ISA, OSA, UUCA (Universities and University Colleges Act) and PPPA (Printing Presses and Publications Act) because I was a victim under most of the Acts.

If you have evidence of corrupt practices in Umno, will you reveal it to the public?

Yes, of course. When we are in power we have direct access to the people in power, we have the means to do that. I'll give a chance to the members to explain themselves. I don't want to be seen to not follow the procedure within the party but if I am not happy, I will take the next course.

How do you explain the way the public perceives corruption as being perpetrated by politicians and yet nothing is being done about it?

That's why in any form of watchdog - monitoring or enforcement - the element of independence is important. The strength of ACA or the Attorney-General's Chambers or the police should come from their independence.
In political posturing, politicians are willing to do anything but give independence to ACA. Mahathir might speak about ACA's independence but he won't give it (to them). To a certain extent, neither would Anwar when he was DPM. They would have never given ACA independence.

To me, if a politician is really honest, he will give the element of independence to these bodies and this is what's been happening recently that made me depart. It's not an easy departure. This is the toughest decision (I've made) in my life - to go back to a party which I criticised heavily for the past 10 years. It's not easy for me and my family. (But) I'm only loyal to reforms. I cannot be held back by sentiments.

I remember in a speech I made once, that if tomorrow PM makes ACA independent, I will join Umno the day after. I believed they would never give ACA independence because you would lose control and you cannot play politics anymore. When PM made his announcement, I picked it up because to me this is major (news).

What kind of relationship do you have with KS Nallakaruppan since he has been appearing in public with you?

Nalla is quite important to me. If you look the reformasi history, only two politicians went to jail for Anwar - Nalla and I. The rest went to Kamunting, not to prison.

Both of us no longer see eye-to-eye with Anwar. So there must be a very big question mark (on why we left PKR). There must be a reason why we made this decision because I have gone through so much for Anwar and it is not easy to leave the person I have lost almost everything for. Same with Nalla who almost got the death sentence because of Anwar. There must be a reason.

How many people would have done what Nalla did? But regarding his political decisions, I leave it to him. Even when he first met me and told me about setting up a new party, I disagreed because to me, if he wants to set up an NGO, don't go into politics. That was my view but he discussed with BN leaders so it was his decision.

Can you give us an update on the six boxes of documents with evidence of corrupt practices allegedly stashed overseas by Anwar?

I don't know it is still with him. I told the police about the six boxes, I've seen them at a glance before Anwar was arrested. I told them to go get them from Anwar but they stopped at that. I've already given the police a statement about this - go find Anwar. I still remember joking (about it) - that it was not very difficult to find him, he was in prison. I don't know what the outcome was.

de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim was not telling the truth by claiming that scores of Barisan Nasional parliamentarians will crossover to the opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition soon.
"He is lying. I don't believe him, and I don't trust him," he said of Anwar when met by reporters in the lobby of Parliament this afternoon.

Nallakaruppan, who has previously said he had known Anwar personally for 30 years, had a falling out with the former deputy premier and current leader of Pakatan after claiming that he was ‘stabbed in the back' by Anwar.

According to Nallakaruppan, the falling-out was over the 2007 by-election in Ijok, Selangor as well as the contest for one of PKR's three vice-presidents' posts.
"This character and myself, we cannot get along. I tolerated him for 30 years. Now I want to stay away," he added.

After Pakatan's overwhelming victory in the general election, Anwar has claimed that he has about 30 BN parliamentarians ready to defect to his side, thus allowing him to form the government. He has given a September deadline for a change in the government.

Speaking to reporters after a brief meeting with Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in Parliament today, Nallakaruppan said that he was there to give his support to the embattled Abdullah.

He said that the meeting with Abdullah was arranged with the help of his friend, Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Hamzah Zainuddin, and was to allow him to express his support for Abdullah and Barisan Nasional.

‘I love my PM'

Asked why he was doing so while certain parties were claiming Abdullah lacked leadership qualities and that Abdullah was on his way out, Nallakaruppan said he does not think Abdullah was a weak leader.

"He is a good leader. That's why I came to (express my)

support," he said.

Asked further, Nallakaruppan said: "I have to trust my prime minister. I have to love my prime minister."

He also said he had applied after the March 8 general election in writing to Abdullah for MIUP to be accepted into BN, and will accept any decision - positive or otherwise - from the BN chairperson.

"I hope for the best. He's got the right to accept or reject (the application)," said Nallakaruppan.

On his own party, Nallakaruppan said it was getting more support, and hoped that BN's acceptance of MIUP would lead more people to become members.

He also said there is nothing wrong with BN having an additional Indian-based party "as long as every party can support the people."

Previously similar applications by other Indian-based parties have been rejected by the MIC on the grounds that that party alone was sufficient to cater for the needs of the Indian community.

When pointed out that his application may face similar objections, Nallakaruppan said MIC president S Samy Vellu was "a good friend".

"He taught me a lot of things when I was young."

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s estranged friend and former tennis partner Datuk Nalla Karupan met with Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Wednesday to pledge his full support for the Prime Minister.

He said the meeting with Abdullah lasted only for five minutes, as the Prime Minister was very busy.

“He said he would fix another appointment,” Nalla told reporters at the Parliament lobby. Nalla denied that Abdullah was a weak leader, and on his way out.

“To me, he is a good leader. That’s why I have come to support him,” he said.

Nalla to defectors: Goodbye and stay away

Malaysian Indian United Party defectors have been warned not to cause disruption and disharmony in the party which they left behind.

Party president KS Nallakaruppan said that while he could not stop a handful of leaders from leaving, he would not however sit idly when these defectors start causing problems to the party from outside.

“We know that some of these defectors are trying to create problems for us by contacting our members and state leaders, asking them to leave the party.

“Let me warn them to stop these activities. Once they are out of the party, they should just concentrate on serving their new party. They should not try to pull our members out to join them,” he said today.

In the aftermath of the general election, MIUP has been hit by several defections involving some top level leaders, all of whom had returned to their old party PKR.

Some of these leaders were with Nallakaruppan when he left PKR last year following a fallout with PKR leader and good friend Anwar Ibrahim. These leaders then joined forces with him to establish MIUP, which was launched on Nov 25 last year. In the recently held general election, MIUP threw its full support behind BN.

Referring to the leaders who went back to PKR, Nallakaruppan said that he hoped the party (PKR) would be aware of the character of these defectors.

“Some of them played an important role in influencing me to part ways with Anwar and the party.

“Now they have gone back to the party, stating that they only believed in PKR’s ideology. I hope Anwar is aware of the sort of people he is dealing with.

“These are people aiming for financial rewards, not those who have any form of political belief,” added Nallakaruppan.

Political opportunists

The former businessman said that it was a blessing in disguise for his party that these defectors had gone now and “not at a later date when their absence would have been felt deeper”.

“I still have my loyal supporters, members whom I brought into MIUP. These people will help me serve the community. We don’t need political opportunists,” he added.

He said that he had already replaced the departed leaders with capable persons who enjoy strong grassroots support.

“These defectors will one day regret leaving us. They will see that MIUP will survive without them, even do much better than they had anticipated.

“Our aim is to help the community. We will not waver from that cause. Leaders may come and go but our aim will remain. Our members will remain focussed in achieving that,” added Nallakaruppan.

‘Many still with us’

The latest defection to effect the party is the Penang state leader in L Balasupramaniyam who is said to be upset and disillusioned with Nallakaruppan's ‘diddling’ political style. He is expected to join PKR soon.

Yesterday MIUP’s leadership rallied around Nallakaruppan, defending his leadership style and the party’s future.

In a statement issued to the media, MIUP deputy president S Arumugam and vice president R Jagathisvaran, said that members can leave the party if they “cannot perform or expect monetary gains to serve the people”.

“Nallakaruppan did not in any way compromise the interests of thousands of MIUP members for his selfish gains,” they said.

Arumugam and Jagathisvaran said that they were confident that MIUP could achieve its aims of servicing the community.

“We are confident that many of our members are with us in our struggles,” they added.

"I am sure that he would bring good news for the Indian community as soon as he becomes the prime minister in March," he told in a statement.

He said that he had held various discussions with Najib on the plight of the Indian community and was very encouraged by what the latter had to say.

"I am sure that Najib, as the chairperson of the cabinet committee for the Indian committee, will be able to move faster with his reforms as a prime minister," added Nallakarupan.

"At the same time, we must also thank Abdullah, for whatever he has done for the community," he added.

Newly formed Indian-based party, the Malaysian Indian United Party (MIUP), today vowed to support the Barisan Nasional-led government, believing that by doing so, opportunity to elevate the social status of the Indian community would be better.

Party president KS Nallakarupan told his supporters at the party’s launching ceremony held at the Istana Hotel in Kuala Lumpur today that the fledgling MIUP does not want to go against BN policies.

“We believe that the party’s aim can still be achieved by working closely with the BN government,“

We as a party can inject a fresh approach to solving the problems of the Indian community,” he told 800 of his supporters.

The former PKR leader also said that the presence of MIUP, will be a “breath of fresh air which is

much needed to make quick changes for the betterment of the Indian community.”

Nallakaruppan was also quick to stress that there was no intention of discrediting the much-established Indian-based party MIC.

“We are also not saying that the present Indian-based party in the Barisan Nasional is not doing its job to help the community.

“I am sure that that party is doing whatever it can to help the community. But I think we can do better,” he added.

A secondary school

Nallakaruppan said that MIC should continue with their agenda and that the MIUP will also concentrate on its mission though the latter might have different approaches to issues.
“What’s wrong with being another race-based party? You have MCA and Gerakan (both Chinese-based party) and MIC and the Peoples Progressive Front (both Indian-based party) all in BN, why can't MIUP be in BN too?” he argued.

Elaborating on “fresh approaches”, Nallakaruppan said his party have outlined several social programmes as means to tackle the problems of the Indian community.

“We have introduced several programmes like sports, education and many youth-oriented programmes in order to inculcate productivity in the Indian community so they may integrate well with other races in this country,” he said.

He also said that his party would be first launching plans to establish an independent Tamil secondary soon.

When asked if MIUP will contest in the coming general election speculated to be somewhere early next year, Nallakaruppan said his party will not contest.
“I want to concentrate on promoting my party only. Even if BN wants to give me seats to contest, I will not take it. I just want my party to be known first,” he said at a press conference held after the party’s launching ceremony.

‘Go through proper channel’

Nallakaruppan also refused to answer questions on the Hindraf rally which took place earlier today, saying that he wants to only focus on the party’s launch.

“This is a historical day in the history of the politics of Malaysia and an important day for me and my party. I don’t want to talk about the Hindraf rally.”

He however said that he personally felt that the Indian community should abide by the law and work within the proper channel if they wished to express any grievances.

Ex-Anwar's buddy Nalla forms new Indian party

S Nallakarupan, who achieved fame as Anwar Ibrahim's former tennis partner, today announced that he has formed a new Indian political party.

Unveiling the Malaysian Indian United Party (MIUP) to some 100 people present at a press conference in his Kuala Lumpur residence this morning, Nallakarupan said that the party would cater for the Indian community in the country.

He explained that he received the inspiration of forming a new party to cater for Indian Malaysians after quitting PKR, of which he was a member for almost a year.

Nallakarupan quit PKR in May following his realization that the party has marginalized the Indian community.

"I had high hopes and enormous ambitions of being able to do my part to uplift the Indian community through PKR. However, after some time I realized that PKR was not the right platform," Nallakarupan said.

"In the past three to four months, after doing much thinking and getting feedbacks from my family, friends and supporters, I have formed this party," he said.

"The party was approved by the government on Sept 14. I will be the party president and I have identified a team of capable leaders who will help me run it," he said, adding that the primary aim of the party will be to 'bring up' the Indian community which is lagging in economic, political and social development.

'20,000 members in three months'

He also vowed to uplift the standard of living of rural Indians and to help socially problematic Indian youths like those involved in gansterism.

Nallakarupan said that MIUP has 100 members to date, and he will gather 3,000 to 4,000 members by next month. He also vowed to bring in at least 20,000 new members in three to four months time.

Asked if he will get the support of the Indian community, he replied in the affirmative. "They will definitely back me."
"If I could bring in 10,000 members into PKR after I joined the party, I would be able to do the same now," he said, adding that he will travel across the country after Hari Raya to recruit members.

He said MIUP is presently an independent party, but left the option to either join the Barisan Nasional or the opposition front open.

Nalla also explained that he has not thought about contesting in the coming general election "but may consider doing so if his supporters want him."

"It is not for me to decide. I need feedback from party supporters."

Queried on the need for another Indian party, Nallakarupan said: "We can have 10 Indian political parties. But I have formed this party to do my part for the community.

'Loyal to the country'

"This party will be loyal to the country. It will also be the voice for the Indians in this country," he said

Explaining the three colours (yellow, red and blue) in the party flag, Nallakarupan said: "Yellow symbolizes the sun that shines on the party's struggle to uphold the Indian community, red means bravery in the struggle and blue reflects the happiness and harmony in the community."

Former PKR Youth chief and Gerak chairperson Ezam Mohd Noor, who was also present at the press conference, said he was there to lend support to Nallakarupan as an "friend."

"I'm here as a NGO representative. I support any party, especially those with a clear objectives to fight graft in the country."

The official launching of the party will be held at the Putra World Trade Centre next month.

Datuk K.S. Nallakarupan, whose main claim to fame was playing tennis with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, may soon make his debut in party politics.

The businessman who regards Anwar as “my good friend” looks set to become a vice-president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) after securing the second highest number of nominations for the post.

Raring to go: Nallakarupan, the businessman, signed up as a party member in August.

“It shows that party members want me,” he said.

He admitted that Anwar, who is PKR advisor, had asked him to join the party in 2004 but he had spent the last few years focusing on his business, travelling as well as making a pilgrimage to India.

He only signed up as a member last August.

Nallakarupan, 60, was a casualty in the chain of events set off by the sacking of the former deputy prime minister in 1998.

The then executive director of the betting company Magnum Corp spent a year in prison after being charged with possessing several rounds of ammunition with an expired weapons permit. He was acquitted in August 1999.

He was widely described as Anwar’s “tennis partner” and also had to endure insinuations that he had arranged Anwar’s extra-curricular activities.

“Don’t believe the rumours you have heard about us. Anwar played tennis with many people but I was the only unlucky partner who went to jail. I can forget my wedding anniversary but I can never forget July 31, 1998, the day I was arrested.”

He is reputed to be a compelling Tamil speaker and has been tasked to secure Indian support for PKR.

He is open to the idea of contesting in the general election but said he would leave it to the party leadership to decide.

The party polls, the second in its short history, is scheduled for May.

The tall and lanky politician who has a pronounced paunch looks anything but a tennis player these days. He said that was because he has long given up the game.

He has not picked up a tennis racquet since the day he was arrested.

Then, with a twinkle in his eye, he said: “Tennis is not good for my health.”

Nallakarupan has received 25 nominations whereas incumbent and cardiologist Dr Lee Boon Chye is leading the race for the three vice-president's posts with 58 nominations.

Nalla returns with a bang

After an 18-year hiatus, KS Nallakarupan has returned to politics to deliver ‘thunderstorms and earthquakes’.

The former MIC leader, who joined opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) last year, also vowed to bring in Indian members in droves.

Unabashedly, he declared that he brought in 10,000 Indians into the party since his entry six months ago and another 10,000 were eagerly waiting for the green light.

“PKR means Dato Nalla, PKR is Dato Nalla. That is the talk among the Indians,” he told malaysiakini during a recent interview.

The businessman is a close confidant of PKR advisor and former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim. The pair had played tennis together during rosier times.

In 1998, Nallakarupan became the first casualty in the struggle between Anwar and his estranged ex-boss, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Nallakaruppan was charged and jailed for a year for ‘illegal possession of bullets with an expired weapons permit’.

Following Anwar’s dismissal, Nallakarupan was accused of numerous other misdeeds, including having arranged the former deputy premier’s sexual liaisons.

However, this is an episode in his life which Nallakarupan did not wish to recollect.

“The past is past. I don’t want to go into that again,” he said when quizzed on his experience.

“My suffering in the Sungai Buloh prison and prior detention in (the federal police headquarters in) Bukit Aman are enough for me. I don’t want to dwell on that again.

“Don’t bring me to that episode in my life. Let me live a new life,” added the 60-year-old politician.

He also revealed that he has stopped playing tennis because the sport landed him in a lot of trouble.

“Nobody in the world ever got into political problems by playing tennis, but I did. For health reasons, also, I have decided not to play tennis (anymore),” he said.

Strong support

Returning to his role in PKR, Nallakarupan said he was confident of contributing to the party because there was strong support for him in the Indian community.

He also said that many of them were eager to join the party because they wanted change.

“They keep on coming, there’s no end to it. They keep on coming, they keep on calling me. The Indians this time are really going all out. The support for me is very good,” he said.

Nallakaruppan, who has received a high number of nominations to contest for vice-presidency in the coming party polls, said the Indian community always sought a leader in PKR and until his arrival, there was no such person.

“Without any position I can bring in people. If I become vice-president, imagine what can happen in the party. There will be thunderstorms and an earthquakes,” he stressed.

He was also not perturbed by the reservations and consternation expressed by certain quarters in PKR who feared that Nallakarupan will inject the ‘MIC culture’ into the opposition party.

He said PKR Youth vice-chief S Manikavasagam, who was one of those against his entry in the past, was now actively campaigning for his candidacy as vice-president.

As of the day of the interview (March 20), Nallakaruppan said 19 party divisions had nominated him. That puts him by far the most formidable challenger for one of the three vice-president posts in PKR.

He also pointed out that other races in the party also supported him as one of his first nominations came from the Malay-majority division of Sabak Bernam in Selangor.

“They understand. I’m in the party to help PKR and to help my friend Anwar Ibrahim,” he said.

Akhir minggu ini dan awal minggu hadapan kita di Malaysia akan meraikan dua perayaan besar, iaitu Diwali atau lebih dikenali di sini sebagai Deepavali dan sambutan Aidilfitri. Dua perayaan ini akan dirayakan berdekatan antara satu sama lain oleh penganut Hindu, untuk Diwali dan Muslim untuk sambutan Aidilfitri yang dijangkakan jatuh pada 24 Oktober (Aidilfitri) dan pada 21 Oktober (Diwali).

Dalam perdebatan yang tidak kunjung selesai mengenai halal atau haram sambutan bersama atas dua perayaan besar tersebut, saya tertarik dengan cerita-cerita yang melatari dua perayaan tersebut yang dikira memberikan pengajaran dan semangat yang berprinsip kepada kebaikan, kedamaian,dan keadilan..

Antara riwayat yang popular bagi perayaan Diwali , adalah kisah kemenangan yang dikecapi oleh Dewa Rama yang mengalahkan Dewa kejahatan bernama Ravan juga terkenal dengan gelaran “Dasamukha”.(bermuka sepuluh) atau "Dasagriva"(berkepala sepuluh) kerana mempunyai 10 kepala.

Ravan dikurniakan kebijaksanaan dan kekuatan tetapi tamak sehingga Ravan mengusai 3 dunia yang berlainan iaitu dunia manusia, cakerawala, dan syaitan. Dengan kurniaan kepala sepuluh, Ravan berkeupayaan dengan 10 kekuatan dan kebijaksanaan dari semua kejadian.

Penguasaan tersebut menjadikan Ravan begitu berkuasa sehingga dikisahkan mampu mengarahkan matahari dan bulan beredar. Ravan menjadi sombong dan bongkak serta tidak boleh ditegur. Kisah Ravan dalam Ramayana memberikan petunjuk bahawa ketaatan tanpa kebijaksanaan adalah sia-sia. Ravan adalah lambang kepada bahaya bagi sifat ego dan serakah.

Rama atau Ramachandran yang juga seorang raja bagi bumi telah dibuang selama 14 tahun ke hutan kerana berkorban untuk kehormatan bapanya, kemudian isterinya Sita telah diculik oleh Ravan Demi menyelamatkan isterinya dia telah bertarung dengan Ravan yang kukuh dan gagah dengan tenteranya dari pelbagai dunia. Pertempuran itu digambarkan sengit dan hebat dengan pelbagai senjata dan magis.

Akhirnya Rama dengan bantuan adik beradiknya berjaya menewaskan dan memengal memenggal kepala Ravan lalu membebaskan Sita. Rama diangkat sebagai raya Ayodhya (ibu negeri bagi kerajaan). Ram adalah lambang kepada sifat belas yang tegar, keberanian dan ketaatan kepada agama dan tangunggjawab.

Sambutan Diwali sering dikaitkan pemasangan lampu 'Perayaan Cahaya' di mana penganut Hindu memasang pelita tanah liat yang dipanggil "diyas" atau bentuk lampu antara lain merayakan kejayaan Rama menutup dan menghapuskan ketamakan dan sifat ego atas kelebihan yang dikurniakan, hari tersebut dipanggil Dussehra.

Kilauan cahaya yang terpancar daripada api pelita ini bukan sahaja mencerminkan kehangatan malah menandakan kejayaan yang diraih disamping memperoleh kekayaan, kemasyhuran, ilmu pengetahuan atau keamanan.

Saya juga difahamkan perayaan Aidilfitri juga mempunyai semangat yang hampir sama, iaitu untuk manusia kembali kepada keadaan fitrah yang tidak tercoreng dengan noda dan dosa kepada tuhan dan manusia melalui didikan di bulan puasa. Kita diajarkan juga kisah Nabi Muhamad, selepas perang Badar yang hebat dan besar, Muhamad S.A.W menegaskan pada umatnya ada perang lebih besar iaitu perang melawan nafsu yang serakah dan ego.

Saya mengharap dua perayaan ini tidak lekang dari semangatnya iaitu pemulihan jiwa dan penegakkan kebenaran dan keadilan.

Akhir kata suka saya berkongsi kalimat Tagore yang Indah ditujukan kepada Diwali

“Malam adalah kegelapan,

Nyalakanlah dengan lampu cinta

Ucapan Sempana Penyertaan Ke Parti KeADILan Rakyat

Penyertaan saya ke dalam Parti KeDILan Rakyat bersama-sama isteri saya iaitu Datin Jijayakumari juga semua golongan profesional terutamanya para peguam, doktor, jurutera, akauntan adalah dengan satu matlamat. Saya akan cuba membantu melakukan yang terbaik daripada segala aspek. Secara jujur, saya katakan bahawa saya menyertai Parti Keadilan Rakyat adalah kerana Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Hasrat saya adalah untuk membantu kepulangan beliau ke dalam arena politik tanah air. Beliau merupakan sahabat saya yang paling baik. Dahulu, beliau merupakan rakan bermain tenis, tapi kini beliau adalah rakan politik saya. Malah kerana persahatan inilah yang menjadikan keluarga kami rapat. Dengan penyertaan saya ke dalam Parti Keadilan Rakyat, saya berjanji akan berjuang bersama-sama Dato' Seri dan rakan-rakan seperjuangan semua. Bagi saya, dengan perjuangan ini menjadi bukti persahabatan kami yang tulus dan suci ini. Terus terang saya katakan saya amat menyayangi persahabatan ini.

Sebenarnya, telah berhari-hari, malah bertahun-tahun lamanya saya berfikir untuk bersama-sama beliau berjuang di dalam Parti KeADILan Keadilan Rakyat. Saya berasa amat bangga dan berterima kasih serta bersyukur kerana beliau Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim telah memberi saya peluang untuk menyertai Parti Keadilan Rakyat ini dan berjuang bersama-samanya.

Saya memulakan karier saya di dalam bidang insuran, kemudian saya telah menyertai PEKEMAS. Maka di sinilah bermulanya era politik saya. Selepas itu, saya menyertai Parti GERAKAN dan kemudian saya menyertai Malaysian Indian Congress Party atau singkatannya MIC. Selepas pertemuan saya dengan Dato' Seri Samy Vellu di satu majlis MIC, beliau menjadi kawan rapat saya. Saya telah dilantik menjadi Pengerusi Cawangan Bukit Bandaraya pada tahun 1983. Kemudian pada tahun 1985, saya telah diberi mandat untuk menjawat jawatan Timbalan Ketua Pemuda Nasional MIC. Selepas itu, pelbagai rintangan dan halangan telah saya tempuhi. Jatuh, bangun dalam hidup dan dunia politik. Pada tahun 1989, saya menghadapi krisis peribadi dengan Dato' Seri Samy Vellu yang mana telah menyebabkan pemecatan saya daripada parti MIC. Kemudian, saya menumpukan perhatian dalam bidang perniagaan selama 17 tahun. Namun, dalam masa yang sama saya masih mengekalkan persahabatan saya dengan beliau. Kini, saya kembali ke arena politik di bawah wadah yang baru di atas nama Parti KeADILan Rakyat bersama-sama Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim meneruskan perjuangan politik demi rakyat dan negara.

Negara patut memberi penghormatan kepada sesiapa yang telah berusaha dan berjuang demi negara. Mereka patut menerima penghormatan! Orang yang telah berjasa memperkenalkan saya kepada dunia politik, seorang yang masyarakat India amat hormati dan mengenalinya sebagai seorang pejuang rakyat. Beliau adalah mendiang Dr. V. David. Saya mencadangkan pada masa akan datang, pihak kerajaan menamakan satu jalan di Petaling Jaya bersempena dengan nama beliau. Ini adalah satu penghormatan kepada perjuangan mendiang Dr. V. David.

Sekarang, saya berdiri di hadapan anda semua bersama-sama dengan Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim iaitu Mantan Timbalan Perdana Menteri Malaysia, dan sekarang beliau merupakan Penasihat Parti KeADILan Rakyat di atas pentas ini, telah memutuskan untuk menyertai Parti KeADILan Rakyat. Keputusan saya ini bukanlah dipengaruhi oleh sebab wang ringgit, atau pangkat, dan bukan juga kepentingan diri sendiri. Kesemua ini pernah saya nikmati.

Motif penyertaan saya ke dalam Parti KeADILan Rakyat adalah untuk bersama-sama berjuang untuk rakyat, membasmi kemiskinan dan menegakkan keadilan. Bukan itu sahaja, malah motif utamanya adalah berjuang bersama-sama sahabat saya Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Pada pendapat, Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim adalah seorang pemimpin yang ulung dan berkarisma dan amat terkenal kepimpinannya bukan sahaja di negara ini malah di dunia. Penyertaan saya ke dalam parti ini adalah dengan niat suci dan tulus ikhlas tanpa didorong dan dipengaruhi oleh sesiapa.

Kerana keakraban persahabatan inilah saya telah mengharungi rintangan hidup yang paling perit, diheret ke penjara, berhadapan dengan hukuman tali gantung. Saya mempertaruhkan nyawa saya kerana persahabatan ini. Ini adalah pengorbanan saya, dan ianya perlu menjadi contoh kepada semua. Saya telah menghadapi segala persengkataan, segala kegembiraan, juga kenangan manis dalam kehidupan saya. Saya juga telah menghadapi segala rintangan sehingga ke puncak keperitan. Pada hari ini, dan selamanya saya amat berterima kasih kepada isteri saya yang tercinta, Datin Vijayakumari yang amat tabah dan sabar menghadapi ranjau hidup bersama. Pernah satu ketika, sebuah akhbar tamil telah menulis tentang berita kematian saya di Penjara Sg. Buluh. Ada seseorang yang tidak dikenali telah menghantar akhbar tersebut pada pukul 4.00 pagi. Malah saya kira, beliau telah menghadapi tekanan dan rintangan melebihi apa yang saya alami. Saya amat-amat berterima kasih kepada beliau. Kerana doa isteri saya, saya mampu berdiri di hadapan anda semua.

Saya dengan ini, pada hari ini bersama-sama isteri, Datin Vijayakumari bersama rakan-rakan daripada kalangan profesional seperti para peguam, doktor, jurutera, dan akauntan daripada kaum India menyertai Parti KeADILan Rakyat. Selepas hari ini, saya tidak akan berdiam diri. Saya akan terus memulakan "road show" ke seluruh negara untuk mencari ahli-ahli baru Parti KeADILan Rakyat. Sekian.
